History of TLAC

• The first City dog pound was on the grounds of Barton Springs Pool.
• 1949:  Parks and Recreation Department swaps land with Animal Control.  PARD takes over Barton Springs dog pound area.  Animal Control pays PARD $1 for the future Town Lake Animal Center site at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez
• 1952: Town Lake Animal Center opens.  The City of Austin contracts with the Austin Humane Society to operate the animal shelter while it continues to manage animal control field operations.
• 1992:  City of Austin takes over management of the animal shelter from the Austin Humane Society.
• 2011:  City of Austin Animal Services Office will open state-of-the-art Austin Animal Center Nov. 12.
